Visentini Delivers Victory
The big favorite for the Giro d’Italia victory in 1986 was American Greg LeMond. He had finish third in 1985 and came to this race with great fitness. Joining LeMond on the list of favorites were former Giro champions Francesco Moser and Giuseppe Saronni.
* TRAGIC NOTE: Tragedy hit the Giro again during the !986 Giro. Young Italian racer Emilio Ravasio (Atala-Ofmega) in his second professional season fell victim of a heavy crash during the first stage. He remounted and reached the finish line at Sciacca. A few hours after the stage, he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. Ravasio died after sixteen days in a coma at the hospital in Palermo.

Race Summary:
Stage 1: The first road stage raced 140 km from Palermo to Sciacca. The stage had a huge crash only 10 km from the finish. Italian Emilio Ravasio fell heavily and sustained serious injuries. He received clearance to continue the race and finished the stage significantly behind the stage winner. Tragically he lapsed into a coma shortly after finishing the stage. He passed away two weeks later.
Stage 2: The early stages on the narrow roads of Sicily saw multiple crashes. Greg LeMond met with disaster on stage 2 when he crashed only 8 km from the finish and lost 1’38” to the other contenders.
Stage 5: American Greg LeMond attacked before the “Ultimate Kilometer” flag and won the fifth stage. Giuseppe Saronni led the field sprint across the finish line two seconds after LeMond.
Stage 12:A critical point in the race came on stage 12, a 46 km ITT. Both LeMond and Moser had lost valuable time on the first eleven stages and needed to excel in the time trial to take back lost time. Race leader Giuseppe Saronni and Roberto Visentini were the targets of the LeMond and Moser. Moser had a difficult day finishing 10th and lost additional time to the contenders. LeMond had a brilliant start and led the stage at the halfway check point. LeMond would lose his concentration when 2 Italian riders sat on his wheel illegally drafting the flying American. Instead of continuing LeMond complained to Italian race officials to no avail. By the finish rapidly rising contender Visentini gained thirty-three second on the American with the race leader Saronni gaining 10 seconds.
Stage 16: Opportunities were running out for LeMond to gain time on the contenders. Paul Koechli, LeMond’s coach, set the strategy for a stage 16 attack on the Passo San Marco. The plan work and LeMond escaped the peloton, but Visentini was able to hold the American’s wheel. The gap to the race leader over the summit was more than two minutes. By the stage finish line LeMond placed second, Visentini came third. The time gain for Visentini was 2’04” over Saronni, the Maglia Rosa passed to his shoulders. LeMond climbed into fourth place in the GC.
Stage 18: Visentini rode brilliantly in the closing stages, covering all attacks and suffering only minor time losses to Moser and Saronni in the Cremona Time Trial.
Stage 21 (Cima Coppi): The penultimate stage of the 1986 Giro was 234 km from Bassano del Grappa to Bolzano. The stage featured four major climbs, Rolle, Pordoi (the Cima Coppi), Campolongo, and Gardena. Spanish climber Pedro Munoz rode away from the peloton and rolled over the summit of the Pordoi to win the Cima Coppi.
Stage 22:Team Carrera’s Roberto Visentini rode into the finishing City of Merano to claim a hard-fought Giro d’Italia victory.
